Artist Statement
As an undergraduate student in my 4th year working primarily through print, I focus on themes of human emotion and interaction, and what relationships our feelings and thoughts create with the spaces around us. Throughout my work I utilize ambiguous figures, surreal imagery, and scenes of mundane everyday life in a more dreamlike setting. This body of work utilizes the processes of screen print, drawing and digital stencils to display a monochromatic color scheme experimenting with the values of warm and cool grey tones. These prints depict personifications of everyday emotions and experiences placed into familiar environments such as a person getting ready in their home, people on a crowded street or a conversation between figures. However, although there are similarities in scenes to normal life, there are surreal details that aim to make the ordinary uncomfortable. The absence of bodily elements such as heads and facial expressions force us to focus on the emotional responses of the figure itself, and how feelings and personal connections can manifest themselves in other ways. Through this we can focus on how these environments reflect on our daily lives, making personal feeling and identity seem much more universal.
